The manufacturers of wire products all agree that the best
wire is produced on a drawing surface that is smooth, inert, hard and
strong. The surface should be smooth enough to minimise galling wear;
inert enough to avoid adhesive wear; hard enough not to be scratched;
and strong enough to resist load deformation.
Solid ceramic drawing blocks can generally provide these properties but
as usual there are disadvantages - the cost of manufacture of precisely
shaped solid ceramics is prohibitively expensive; the inherent brittleness
of solid ceramics imparts catastrophic failure modes and there is no way
to reclaim damaged components.
The use of the harder metals does not overcome the galling and adhesive
problems - even tungsten carbide/cobalt composites or hard chrome suffer
from plastic deformation under the extreme loads encountered.
C-Ramic coatings provide the optimal solution - the combination of a strong,
hard metal body topped off with a ceramic coating offers a new exciting
approach to quality wire production. All the desirable properties are
incorporated - the smooth ceramic provides an excellent surface to draw
the wire on while the metal substrate provides the supporting role.
C-Ramic coating is applied to a traditionally manufactured drawing block
and this is now is a repairable item that can give unlimited service.
C-Ramic can design and supply the total package required to achieve the
most cost effective solutions in wire drawing.
